SHILLONG:

Sohiong MLA Samlin Malngiang said the Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has assured him that the retaining wall at Sohiong bypass along the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura national highway will be repaired once sanction is accorded.

The MLA told The North East Today (TNT) on Friday, “The PWD department has prepared the estimate. I met the Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of PWD Prestone Tynsong and he gave assurances to let the sanction be accorded first and he will follow up with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and he assured that the road will be repaired as soon as possible.”

He added, “The Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road is a very important road. I have seen that the retaining wall along the highway has slowly started collapsing which took place for the last one year. This will endanger the lives of the people. I have raised this issue with the Deputy Chief Minister and have spoken to executive engineers in charge of the site and with the Chief Engineer.”

Asked, he said that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is yet to be prepared and it will probably cost crores of rupees to repair.

Again, residents also raised concerns of a hillock at Umsohiong which has shown dangerous cracks.

To this, Malngiang said, “If there is a landslide during the monsoon season, it will be dangerous to travel from the junction. As there are visible cracks on the hillock it will put pressure on the existing road.”
