SHILLONG:

A video clip of Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong breaking a coconut during the inauguration of the Bailey bridge on March 25 has now gone viral.

The steel bridge was damaged just 18 days after it opened to the public.
“After a jubilant inaugural of the new bailey bridge on National Highway 6, it is disappointing to learn the bridge has cracked under the weight of bypassing trucks. The project, worth Rs 3 crore, failed,” Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh tweeted.

The 230 ft Bailey bridge is a temporary structure with a capacity of 40 MT built to cater to heavy vehicles and trucks passing through the Shillong Bypass.

Meanwhile, Tynsong informed that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), and Border Roads Organisation (BRO), took swift action to repair the damage.

“I am happy to inform you that traffic has just resumed this afternoon as they have already completed the repairing work,” he said.

He further asserted the need to ensure that the carrying capacity should not cross 40 metric tonnes.
