SHILLONG:

The Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) and the Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) have formed a coordination committee to revive the demand for the bifurcation of the state of Meghalaya into Khasi-Jaintia state and Garoland state.

Speaking to media persons on Monday, HSPDP president K.P. Pangngiang informed that a meeting was recently held at Tura in West Garo Hills between the two bodies to discuss this issue.

The demand for bifurcation of the state was initiated by veteran leaders namely HSPDP supremo (L) H.S Lyngdoh and Garo National Council (GNC) leader (L) Clifford Marak.

Pangniang informed that the name of the coordination committee of the HSPDP and GNC for the demand of separate states has not been decided yet.

He also said that the coordination committee will hold another meeting on the same, and after thorough deliberation, they will submit a memorandum to the Government of India to apprise the centre of its demand.

According to the HSPDP president, the centre should identify and preserve regionalist identity, as seen in the culture, language and landholding system.

In 2012, the HSPDP and the GNC had initiated the demand for separate states "in the interest of indigenous people", and the revival may be seen as the renewal of the same old discourse.
