SHILLONG:

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said that both the Assam and Meghalaya governments are communicating to ensure that there is no escalation of the situation along the interstate border.

"I had spoken and called up Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and communicated to him that we need to maintain peace," Sangma said.

A clash between the border residents and Assam police was reported from Iongkhuli village under Jirang constituency in Meghalaya on July 26.

It was alleged that Assam police personnel had forcefully removed four electric poles erected by the staff of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) in the village, leading to a confrontation between Assam police and the residents of the area, including the MDC of Mawhati, Charles Marngar.

"Accordingly, the Assam Chief Minister had agreed and, instructions were given that there should be the maintenance of peace in that area and, while discussions on border issues are going on already, there is no need to escalate or create tension," the Meghalaya CM said.

The CM had also asked the Jirang MLA to visit the location, assess the situation and report back by Tuesday evening.

It may be mentioned that the incident along the Meghalaya-Assam border occurred around the same time when violence broke out along the Assam-Mizoram border, leading to the death of six police personnel and injuring many others.
