SHILLONG:

BJP national general secretary Arun Singh, who is on a visit to Meghalaya on Saturday, announced the party's plan to wipe out the Congress from Meghalaya while claiming that the grand old party has "totally" failed under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi.

Speaking to media persons in Shillong, Singh ridiculed the Congress and said a party with no ideology often resort to stunts by taking U-turns and opposing every single thing that the government does.

"Congress leaders have totally failed; nobody believes the Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. They are taking U-turns every time and are opposing everything. Congress is doing all negative and destructive politics. In Meghalaya, Congress will be wiped out; it is being wiped out from most of the states - now it is Meghalaya's turn," he said.

Furthermore, he exuded confidence in snatching away many of the seats held by Congress in the upcoming 2023 general elections in the state.

"BJP will take a place and will win in most of the seats that belong to the Congress," he confidently said.

Meanwhile, when asked about the reported infighting within the BJP in Meghalaya, Singh brushed aside the reports and said party members are working well with everyone, adding that his purpose of visiting the state was to review the party organisation and boost the morale of party workers.

"BJP is one with one goal. There is no infighting; members are working along with everyone," he claimed.

Reports of infighting within the party surfaced following the sudden change in ministership in the Conrad Sangma-led cabinet, supposedly on the recommendation of BJP state president Ernest Mawrie.

It may be reminded that former health minister and BJP MLA AL Hek was dropped from the cabinet to give way for his colleague, Sanbor Shullai. Surprisingly, Hek was unaware of the decision and the announcement came as a shock to him, with many suggesting a growing rift between party leaders and lack of communication within the BJP.

According to BJP sources, the visit of central leaders to the state was to review the performance of the party while setting the plans and strategies in motion in the run-up to the 2023 assembly elections.
