Manipur: Assam Rifles to  pay Rs 10 lakh to shooting victim's family

In a tripartite agreement signed among three civil society groups, the Assam Rifles is bound to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of a Manipur villager who was allegedly shot dead by the paramilitary force, on humanitarian grounds.

The incident, which occurred at Chalwa village in Kangpokpi district on Friday night, had triggered widespread outrage among the citizens and took the internet by storm. 

Sources have informed that the villager, identified as Mangboilal Lhouvum, was a daily wage labourer and a resident of Chalwa village in Kangpokpi in Manipur. 

Meanwhile, a case was registered against the Assam Rifles Major for the incident at Chalwa village in Kangpokpi district, which was reportedly triggered after an argument between the Assam Rifles personnel and members of the extremist, Kuki Revolutionary Army.

As per the reports, Brigadier P.S. Arora, commander of the 22 Sector Assam Rifles, signed the agreement on behalf of the paramilitary force on Saturday. 

According to the agreement, the Assam Rifles will pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the deceased's family. An initial amount of Rs 1 lakh was handed over to the family on Saturday.
