DIBRUGARH:

Top ULFA-I leader Dwipen Saud was killed in a fierce encounter with Assam police at Besimari in Assam’s Bongaigaon district on Thursday.

Saud had recently replaced former ULFA-I Deputy Commander-in-Chief Drishti Rajkhowa as the Commander of the outfit’s Western Command.

Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta confirmed the incident and stated that after the encounter, they took Saud to the civil hospital in Bongaigaon where doctors declared him “brought dead.”

“We apprehended his gunman Padum Rai along with a weapon. We recovered another weapon and one grenade, and our search operation is on,” Mahanta said.

The encounter took place soon after Assam Police received information that the ULFA-I was planning a high-profile kidnapping.

A police team carried out the operation, and after a heavy encounter, gunned down the ULFA-I leader.

“We received intel that ULFA-I Western Command was planning some high-profile kidnapping in collaboration with anti-Indian forces. Today’s successful operation is because of high-quality intel that worked for us on the ground,” Mahanta said.
