AGARTALA:

Following the arrest of rifleman Sukanta Das of Tripura State Rifles (TSR), a number of social media posts demanding the death penalty have surfaced.

Addressing the press, the Assistant General of Police (law and order), Subrata Chakraborty said, “Some of these posts call for revenge/extrajudicial killings along communal lines. They have been sent to the competent authority as investigation is underway. Spreading these messages could invite legal complications. The Tripura Police has appealed to the citizens of our state to not share and circulate hate speeches as it could lead to communal tension in the state. Justice will be given.”

Chakraborty informed that the Bishalgarh sub-divisional magistrate court (Sepahijala district), on Sunday, has granted five days of police remand to Das.

The accused had earlier killed two of his senior officials, Subedar Markha Singh Jamatia and Naik-Subedar Kiran Jamatia, on the issue of his leave application.

Recalling the incident, government advocate Gautam Giri said, “This incident happened over the issue of leave application. When it was not granted, Sukanta Das opened fire. Subedar Markha Singh Jamatia died on the spot. Naik Subedar Kiran Kumar Jamatia tried to snatch the gun and sustained injuries. However, he succumbed to his injuries in Tripura Medical College, Agartala. Das fled the spot and later, surrendered before the police in Madhupur police station. Ranga Dulal Debbarma, a TSR personnel filed a written complaint against him.”

Das was arrested and produced before the court. The case number is Madhupur PS 20/2021, under Section 302 of the IPC and 27 of Arms Act. Upon hearing, the court granted him 5 days of police remand.
