Tripura: CPI (M) accuses BJP of threatening party workers, demands adequate security for civic polls

In the memorandum, the CPI-M has alleged that since the announcement of the civic body elections, members of the BJP have started threatening and attacking the CPI(M) leadership and workers of Dharmanagar Municipal area.

The opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) of Tripura’s North district has submitted a memorandum to the District Election Officer, demanding adequate security measures for free and fair conduct of upcoming civic body elections.

In the memorandum, the CPI-M has alleged that since the announcement of the civic body elections, members of the BJP have started threatening and attacking the CPI(M) leadership and workers of Dharmanagar Municipal area.

“Ever since the submission of nomination papers on October 27, in ward numbers 02, 03, 04, 05, 08, 09, 12, 16, 18, 19, 23, 24 under Dharmanagar Municipal Council, members of the BJP have threatened CPI (M) to refrain from conducting election rallies," alleged CPI(M) while adding that they have been also asked to withdraw nomination papers.

The CPI (M) has also submitted the memorandum to the DGP Tripura and the Secretary of State election Commission over the matter demanding fair elections in Panisagar Nagar Panchayat and Dharmanagar Municipal Council.

“Adequate security should be ensured for all the candidates contesting the election. All miscreants should be identified and arrested as house attackers and severe punishment should be given. The Security of the election workers and voters must be ensured. Election Code of Conduct should be strictly applied equally to every political party”, the memorandum read.

Notably, the polls in 20 urban local bodies of Tripura are slated for November 25.

The last date of submitting nomination papers was on November 3, with the date for scrutiny of nomination papers on November 5, and counting will take place on November 28.
