AGARTALA:

A war of words is likely to land Tripura's BJP MLA Arun Chandra Bhowmik in controversy after he allegedly called for "Talibani-style attacks" on Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders if they land at the Agartala airport.

Addressing the public at a felicitation ceremony of the newly-inducted central social justice and empowerment minister of state Pratima Bhowmik, MLA Bhowmik said that TMC leaders from West Bengal were trying to destroy the Biplab Deb-led BJP government in Tripura upon West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's instructions.

"I appeal to all of you to attack them (TMC leaders) in Talibani style. We need to attack them as soon as they land at the airport here. We shall protect our government here with every drop of blood," Bhowmik said.

A video clip of his purported remarks went viral on social media inviting wide criticism.

Reacting to the legislator, Tripura TMC leader Subal Bhowmik demanded his arrest and also said that TMC leaders were harassed at an Agartala-based hotel on Wednesday night.

BJP legislator Bhowmik, however, said that he had made the comment with the intention to narrate how to counter them (TMC) seriously.

A continuous political tussle has been going on between TMC and BJP over Tripura and clashes between the two parties have also been reported over the past few weeks.

Tripura Police had earlier arrested 14 TMC leaders and workers.

FIR was also registered against TMC MPs Abhishek Banerjee, Dola Sen and other party leaders for misbehaving with the Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) and the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Khowai and preventing them from discharging their duty.

TMC, on the other hand, alleged that its party workers were attacked by the BJP workers in Agartala and instead of arresting the attackers, the Police booked the victims.
