AGARTALA:

In a shocking incident, a 40-year-old man killed five persons including his two minor daughters and a police official in the intervening night of November 26, at Sheoratali under the Khowai district of Tripura.

According to the police, one Pradip Debroy of Uttar Ramchandraghat, Sheoratali, at around 11 pm on Friday, attacked his wife, Mina Debroy (32), and two minor daughters - Mandiraa Debroy (7) and Aditi Debroy (1) - with a shovel in a fit of rage. While Mina sustained serious injuries and managed to flee, both the daughters died on the spot.

"The injured is now undergoing treatment at AGMC & GBP Hospital, Agartala,” said a police official. Pradip, however, didn’t stop at that and also attacked and killed his elder brother Amalesh Debroy (45) when the latter tried to intervene, the police added.

"On getting this information, inspector Satyajit Mallik of Khowai police station along with staff rushed to the spot. Pradip then attacked inspector Mallik who sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to Khowai Hospital. Subsequently, he was referred to AGMC and GBP hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later,” said a police official.

“Then Pradip attacked one Krishna Das (45) and Karnadhir Das (22), son of Rakesh Das of Nabodaya area when they were passing through the spot in an auto-rickshaw," the police added. Krishna sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Khowai Hospital but couldn’t be saved. “Karnadhir Das is now undergoing treatment at AGMC & GBP hospital,” said the police official.

The police had to send additional forces to overpower Pradip and a case (No. 108/2021 U/S 302/307/326/333/353/427 IPC, Dt. 27/11/2021) was registered against him at the Khowai police station on Friday. He was produced in front of a Magistrate on November 27. However, the police are still unsure about the motive behind Pradip’s killing spree.

Expressing shock at the incident, Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb took to Twitter and condoled the death of the five persons in the freak attack.

"Deeply shocked at the martyrdom of Satyajit Mallick, second officer of Khowai police station in the attack of a mad miscreant in the lines of honest duty. Praying for the peace of his soul and of all those who died in the incident. I extend my condolences to all bereaved family members. Praying to God for the speedy recovery of all injured persons (sic)," he tweeted.
