AGARTALA:

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on November 28 swept the civic body elections in Tripura, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation, and all other urban local bodies.

The counting for the civic bodies election started at 8 am on November 28 amidst tight security across all the eight districts of the state.

In the 20 civic bodies, the ruling BJP won 6 seats uncontested, while the elections were held in 14 seats. The total poll percentage was registered at 81.54 per cent.

“The.BJP made a clean sweep in almost all the seats. CPIM won three wards, All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won one ward, while an independent candidate won one. We have not received any complaints of violence, and everything was peaceful,” an official from the State Election Commission said.

The opposition CPIM won from Ward number 6 of Kailasahar Municipal Council, ward number 15 of Ambassa municipal council under Dhalai District, and Ward number 2 of Panisagar Municipal Council of North district.

The All India Trinamool Congress, on the other hand, won from Ward number 13 of Ambassa Municipal Council under Dhalai District.

Speaking on the victory, Chief Minister, Biplab Kumar Deb said, “Referendum of Tripura Urban Local Body Elections declared today shows the faith of people of Tripura in the developmental policies of Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji. It also shows their belief in his motto of Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas.

“It's a remarkable win for @BJP4Tripura in #Agartala Municipal Corporation Election, @BJP4Tripura won 51 out of 51 seats. People of Agartala have shown abundant confidence in the double engine government led by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji”, Deb wrote. “I am thankful to all the people of #Tripura & Dev Tulya karyakartas of @BJP4Tripura for their affection and support. I consider your votes to @BJP4Tripura as blessings and these blessings motivate us to work harder for the development of all 37 Lakh people of the state”, tweeted Deb.

Giving details about the poll results, the CPIM, however, claimed that the results were 'not good' for the BJP.

“Since the beginning of the poll process the ruling party, in connivance with the government machinery, attempted to manipulate all these things so accordingly the results also yielded. Hence, it’s not a good result from the ruling party,” CPIM state committee secretary Jitendra Chowdury told The Northeast Today (TNT)

Later this evening, TMC leader Rajiv Banerjee claimed that it is rare in the political history of India that any political party has fought for three months and secured the second position with almost 24 per cent votes.

“In the last municipal elections, BJP got 14.1 per cent votes. Subsequently, they came to power after the 2018 assembly election. This is exactly what will happen in the 2023 assembly polls. The Trinamool Congress is taking an oath to bring change and develop Tripura. We sincerely thank the people of Tripura for voting for us,” he said.
