DARJEELING:

The borders of Kalimpong district in the Himalayan foothills of West Bengal have been sealed for 72 hours as a precautionary measure for Saturday's polls.

Kalimpong District Magistrate R. Vimala said the borders of Kalimpong, including the border with Sikkim, will be sealed on April 17 according to the orders of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

"Voting for the three hill constituencies of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Kurseong will take place on April 17 (Saturday), and all International, State and inter-district borders are sealed 72 hours before completion of the poll (at 6:30 pm on April 17)," Vimala said.

Meanwhile, the order proved worrisome for residents of the neighbouring state as the National Highway (NH)-10 is widely considered the lifeline of Sikkim and passes through Kalimpong.

However, the order stated that emergency cases would be allowed passage subject to verification.
