GANGTOK:

Following the protests held against football icon Bhaichung Bhutia in Namchi, nine people were arrested on Sunday, all of whom were seen burning the effigy of Sikkim icon Bhaichung Bhutia.

According to sources, they have been released on bail as sections 188 Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 51 of the DM act are bailable. The police are yet to continue their search for six more persons accused in the case.

Earlier, a group of women under the purported banner of 'Dakshin Sikkim Nari Sangh' (South Sikkim Nari Sangh) had shouted slogans, waved placards against the football icon Bhaichung Bhutia at Central Park, Namchi on June 9.

A video of the same had surfaced on social media wherein an effigy of Bhaichung Bhutia was burnt down at Namchi.

The protest was staged due to the latter's opposition to construct a 300-bed hospital in Namchi, South Sikkim.
