GANGTOK:

The National Highway number 10 that connects Sikkim with the rest of India has been completely blocked due to landslides triggered by incessant rains, officials reported on Monday.

The landslides happened at the 29 Mile area in West Bengal's Kalimpong, and personnel from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) are currently working on war footing to clear the stretch.

It was reported that the debris from the landslides have blocked almost 70 metres stretch of the road, preventing the movement of vehicles from West Bengal and other parts to the state.

Meanwhile, to ease things for the moment, vehicles are being diverted through alternate routes passing via Darjeeling to ensure smooth vehicular movement in the region.

The NH 10 considered as the lifeline of Sikkim was reported to be blocked four times this year due to landslides, and the incidents were mostly confined to about 60 km from the Sikkim border town of Rangpo.
