Nagaland Assembly Speaker nominated as member of national committee

The only other representation from the North East in such a Committee of Presiding Officers is the Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly, Yumnan Kemchand Singh.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has nominated Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) Speaker Sharingain Longkumer into the Committee of the Presiding Officers to review the powers of presiding officers under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution and the Rules made thereunder.

The committee will be headed by Dr C.P. Joshi Speaker, Rajasthan Legislative Assembly as the chairperson, while, Dr Surjya Narayana Patro, Speaker, Odisha Legislative Assembly, Vishweshwar Hedge Kageri, Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Sharingain Longkumer, Speaker, Nagaland Legislative Assembly are the members in this committee. 

According to a release issued by NLA on Thursday, the only other representation from the North East in such a Committee of Presiding Officers is the Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly, Yumnan Kemchand Singh.

Singh has been nominated as member of the Presiding Officers Committee to Examine the Matter of Financial Independence of Legislature Secretariat constituted by the Lok Sabha speaker.

Calling it a well-deserved recognition for the State of Nagaland, the release stated, "With Nagaland having its own share of Petitions under the 10th Schedule, his (Longkumer) association with this Committee will be in the larger interest of Parliamentary democracy."
