Nagaland: Assam Rifles accuse NSCN (KYA) of grenade attack

Terming the action of NSCN (KYA) against the locals and security forces cowardly, the Assam Rifles said that the banned outfit has become desperate as the people have denied them support in terms of money and ration.

Militants of the banned outfit National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-KYA) attacked an Assam Rifles sentry when the latter was returning after clearing a landside-hit area in Mon district, Nagaland, on Friday, a statement issued by the Assam Rifles said.

The statement stated that a team of Assam Rifles personnel and local villagers from Kangyu, Wangto, and Chenloiso were returning after clearing the debris caused by a landslide on the track of Chenloiso-Hydro project when NSCN (KYA) militants “lobbed three hand-grenades from a height above the dense foliage".

The grenades landed in front of the civilians, of which one went off, injuring one Keipa, a 75-year old resident of Kangynu village. Keipa was rushed to the Assam Rifles base and was given first aid before being moved to Mon for further treatment.

Terming the action of NSCN (KYA) against the locals and security forces cowardly, the Assam Rifles said that the banned outfit has become desperate as the people have denied them support in terms of money and ration.

As per the statement, before the incident on August 10, the chairman of Chenloiso village had approached the Assam Rifles stationed at COB Chenloiso for help in clearing the landslide-hit area on August 10.

The commander of Assam Rifles had agreed to assist the villagers and sent a team to assess the site, the next day. The team, along with local villagers.
