AIZAWL:

The Centre has sent a four-member team to Mizoram as the state continues to reel under a surge in Covid-19 cases.

The state reported 1,471 fresh Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, and 1,681 new cases on Tuesday, a spike higher than other Northeastern states in the last few weeks.

With Wednesday's figures, Mizoram positivity rate currently stands at 15.36 per cent, which is again much higher than the national average of 3 per cent, according to the central government data.

The state now has 16,005 active cases, with Aizawl reporting the highest, followed by Lunglei and Kolasib districts.

The central team will hold discussions with chief medical officers of all districts on Wednesday. The team will also visit various Covid-19 care facilities in the state to take stock of the health infrastructure in place.

Meanwhile, amid the worsening COVID situation in the state, opposition Congress has come down heavily on the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) government for being unable to contain the surge.

Citing examples of other states and how they have managed to control the Covid situation, Senior Congress leader Zodintluanga Ralte took a dig at Chief Minister Zoramthanga, accusing the government of inefficiency in handling the situation.

Ralte further said that the ruling government used the pandemic as an opportunity to make profit, keeping the health of the people in the state at stake.

Holding Health Minister Dr. R Lalthangliana and Health and Family welfare vice-chairman Dr. ZR Thiamsanga accountable for the Covid crisis, the Opposition leaders also highlighted the poor medical infrastructure in the state, including the lack of  RT-PCR labs in Mizoram.

Refuting the allegations levied against them by the opposition, Lalthangliana had earlier reiterated that Mizoram was one of the best performing states in the country in terms of Covid-19 management and vaccination.

Taking note of the alarming rise of COVID cases, the ruling government has assured that RT-PCR laboratories would be set up in all districts of the state, and it will ramp up other health facilities to tackle the crisis. Notably, Zoram Medical College (ZMC) is currently the only dedicated Covid-19 hospital in the state.
