AIZAWL:

The Mizoram government on Saturday decided to lift complete lockdown from Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) areas following a decline in COVID-19 cases.

A press statement issued by the government stated that the decision has been taken to allow the resumption of economic activities. "A further extension in lockdown is unthinkable because it severely affected the state's economy and livelihood of the poor," read the statement.

A high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister, Tawnluia also suggested that stringent guidelines would be put in place before allowing the resumption of economic activities in the state.

Tawnluia said that the impact of the second Covid-19 wave on the state's economy has been severe, and it is time to balance the livelihood of the people while controlling the surge of the virus.

The Health Department also informed that although the government is trying its best to cope with the second wave by ramping up health facilities and manpower, the livelihood of the people cannot be put at stake by extending the lockdown further.

Notably, like many other states in the Northeast, Mizoram had also imposed a total lockdown in AMC areas since July 18, restricting economic activities and people's movement.

Now with many states easing up the lockdown relaxations steadily, the state’s government deemed it fit to follow suit so that the livelihood of common people is not affected.
