AIZAWL:

As COVID-19 cases see a sudden spike in Mizoram, the health infrastructure in the state is adding to the woes of the state government.

Mizoram reported 1,741 fresh COVID-19 cases on Thursday, and the lack of a testing facility has pushed the government to hasten the setting up of laboratories across the state. Currently, the state has only one dedicated RT-PCR test laboratory at Zoram Medical College.

Accordingly, RT-PCR laboratories will be set up in those districts that do not have the facility at the moment, the government said.

The Gauhati High Court too had taken cognizance of the matter earlier, and instructed the state government to set up an RT-PCR laboratory at Lunglei for the benefit of the four southern districts of the state.

The high court order came following Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by an organisation that highlighted the need for setting up more such laboratories.
