SHILLONG:

United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate from Mawphlang constituency Eugeneson Lyngdoh filed his nomination papers for the upcoming bye-polls at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Shillong on Wednesday.

Speaking to the press, the national football player said that “juggling two professions at the same time - politics and football - will not be possible” for him, therefore, his political commitment will require more attention. "I want to focus on one profession and try to do my best," he said.

Lyngdoh asserted that his decision to contest from the party, which is an ally in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, and not as an independent candidate like his father, is based on the decision of the people he represents.

"I stand here because of the people. They wanted me to represent UDP. Irrespective of what may be going on in the government, I stand here as a UDP candidate," Lyngdoh added.

Meanwhile, UDP today named Ashahel D. Shira as a candidate from Rajabala constituency. However, the party will not contest from Mawrynkneng, and instead, support National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Pyniaid Sing Syiem.
