Chairperson of Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Iamonlang M. Syiem, on Saturday, said that all stakeholders -- be it the government, society or families should play a role in eradicating child labour.

Speaking to The Northeast Today (TNT) on the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour observed under the theme “Act Now: End Child Labour”, she said, “Engaging children in labour is like stealing childhood away from the little ones.”

It is never too late to act even amid the pandemic, Syiems said, adding that it is a struggle and has called upon the society to be determined to fight against the social evil.

She pointed that issues of poverty, inequality, etc, are some of the deep root causes of child labour.

“The deep root cause is poverty, inequality, large families, illiteracy, social apathy," she said.

The SCPCR chief said the world community should create more awareness and take an aggressive approach in every way possible collectively.

Syiem said that the people should be conscious of not employing children in coal mines or risky locations.

The issues surrounding children should be addressed and strategised efforts should be taken to tackle child labour.

World Day Against Child Labour is observed on June 12 every year in almost 100 countries all around the globe.

According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and UNICEF, the number of children in child labour has risen to 160 million worldwide – an increase of 8.4 million children in the last four years.
