State needs ecotourism to promote inclusive growth, says Environment Minister James Sangma

Addressing the function as the chief guest, Forest and Environment Minister James K Sangma stressed on the need of ecotourism and niche tourism in the state of Meghalaya for inclusive economic opportunities.

The Department of Tourism and Travel Management, Lady Keane College, Shillong, celebrated World Tourism Day on Monday via the online mode this year under the theme "Tourism for Inclusive Growth."

Addressing the function as the chief guest, Forest and Environment Minister James K Sangma stressed on the need of ecotourism and niche tourism in the state of Meghalaya for inclusive economic opportunities.

He also complimented the initiative taken by the college and called for similar programs to be conducted in the future by various tourism stakeholders for advancement of the industry in the state.

Sangma further said that tourism entrepreneurship is also another dimension that needs urgent attention.

Dr. Benjamin Lyngdoh, Assistant Professor of NEHU, mentioned the need of capacity building and tourism entrepreneurship in the state.

As part of this year's celebration, a competition was organised for college students of Shillong to devise a business model for post-pandemic tourism operations.
