SHILLONG:

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday admitted the need to review the working of the State Public Sector Enterprises (SPSEs) in the state, highlighting that they are facing a lot of challenges for quite some time.

Speaking to media persons on the issue, Sangma said that the issues in SPSEs are a part of the reason why the government is taking steps to address Mawmluh Cherra Cements Limited, which was identified as a loss-making public sector undertaking.

“Today we are going ahead trying to restructure and reform and bring in private equity into this", he said, adding that this process will allow the state to review its fiscal health, as suggested by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India.

The chief minister also recognized the Khadi Board as a good asset with land "at the heart of the city", making it a suitable candidate for revenue generation. Sangma added that he would push to turn the Khadi Board into a Khadi Plaza.

His statements come in the wake of the recommendation made by the CAG on the need for the state to review the working of the SPSEs to either improve their profitability or close their operations.
