SHILLONG:

Taking cognizance of the vandalism of goddess idol at Boothnath Kali Mandir, Mawbah, on the intervening night of January 1 and 2, the Shillong All Faiths Forum (SAFF) and representatives of all faith communities have expressed great displeasure that this obnoxious act had taken place in Shillong, where all communities leave in peace.

The body has denounced the incident, terming it to be a case of hooliganism, aimed at creating communal disharmony among the people of different faiths.

“The incident at Boothnath Kali Mandir, Mawbah, on the intervening night of January 1 and 2 where the idol of a revered goddess was vandalised is truly a case of pure hooliganism and thoughtless vandalism. If not tempered with sanity and understanding, acts such as these would portend to invoke communal hatred and religious fanaticism and perpetrators of these incidents should be appropriately dealt with by the authorities,” SAFF president Dr Purely Lyngdoh stated in a press release.

SAFF has in this regard, urged leaders from different faiths and organisations to be on alert and curb such acts from society, and also ensure that such incidents of idol vandalism are not repeated.

The Forum has also requested all faith leaders to identify those who are crying out in need of lawful support, guidance and counselling as these will promote harmony and respect towards different communities.

Representatives of SAFF, through the release, have appealed to authorities to secure such religious locations in and around the city which are crime-prone zones.
