SHILLONG:

Rajya Sabha MP WR Kharlukhi is determined to raise the issue of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the upcoming parliament session. The National People’s Party (NPP) state president informed that his previous attempts to discuss the issue were unsuccessful as several sessions in the Upper House were washed out due to disruptions caused by the Opposition.

“In the last session, I thought I would get a chance but the session was washed out because of disruptions,” said Kharlukhi.

The demand for the implementation of the ILP has been long pending in Meghalaya. “We have been demanding ILP since 1979 when I was a student,” he said, adding that all those years when the Congress was in power, nothing was done to address the issue.

“At least NPP has taken up the issue... and passed a resolution on the floor of the House. And we're going to pursue it to the end," said the Rajya Sabha MP.

Besides the ILP demand, Kharlukhi informed that he would also be raising issues such as the inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution for the welfare of the people.
