SHILLONG:

Expressing discontentment over the show-cause notice served to the members of "Sur ki Nong Mawlai" (Voice of Mawlai People) by the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, the Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP) on Thursday extended their support to the "Justice for Cheristerfield" movement terming that people have the right to protest.

“We did not see any law and order problem resulting from the protest. The action of the DC is only adding fuel to fire. Who will be held responsible if the agitation intensifies?” the vice president of FKJGP, Eldie N. Lyngdoh said over a statement.

The DC had served a show-cause notice to six members of Voice of Mawlai People for organising unauthorised public gatherings and violating COVID protocols on August 25 and 27 in Shillong.

Meanwhile, other groups - Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong and residents of Nongthymmai Pyllun - have also extended solidarity to the protests and will stage demonstrations in Lad Smit and Nongthymmai football ground, respectively, on Friday.
