SHILLONG:

National People’s Party (NPP) National President and Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday expressed confidence that his party will sweep the upcoming bye-elections to the three Assembly seats – Mawryngkneng, Mawphlang and Rajabala – slated for October 30.

Sangma, however, warned party leaders and candidates not to be complacent. “We know that the people will support us, but it is our duty to work till the end and ensure we win with a maximum margin possible,” he said.

Sangma made the statement earlier on Thursday while accompanying Pynïaid Sing Syiem and Lamphrang Blah, the candidates for Mawryngkneng and Mawphlang, respectively, to the filing of their nomination.

Admitting that, like any other government, the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance too faces the challenge of anti-incumbency, the chief minister said that he is satisfied with the work of the ruling dispensation over the past three-and-half years. “The government has done its best that it could. Especially, given the unprecedented crisis brought on by the pandemic, he said.

He added that Syiem and Blah, who are also sitting members of the district council under the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, have been dedicated to their constituencies. Blah in particular, is a four-time winner from his constituency, which is a clear indication of his popularity amongst the voters there, he said.
