Multiple earthquakes felt in the last 24 hours in Northeast India
Measuring between 2.6 to 4.6 on the Richter scale, the quakes have their epicentre on the critical zone V belt, which most of northeast India is a part of.
After a massive 6.4 magnitude earthquake rattled Assam and other parts of the Northeast on April 28, almost eight earthquakes struck the region at frequent intervals within 24 hours.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the epicentre of the quakes was traced to Sonitpur district in Assam, which also recorded the most destructive earthquake since 1950 in the morning of Wednesday.
Measuring between 2.6 to 4.6 on the Richter scale, the quakes have their epicentre on the critical zone V belt, which most of northeast India is a part of.
Zone V belt is categorised under 'Very High Damage Risk Zone,' where previously highly destructive quakes – like the 8.0 magnitude earthquake of 1897 in Assam and the 8.6 magnitude earthquake of 1950 in the Assam-Tibet belt, have been recorded.
