SHILLONG:

In a bid to intensifying the demand for suspension of police officials involved in the Cheristerfield encounter, the Voice of Mawlai People, a conglomeration of several NGOs, formed a new umbrella organisation uniting various groups from across the Khasi and Jaintia hills, on Wednesday.

Named "Ka sur ka bri u Hynniewtrep" (the Voice of Bri Hynniewtrep), the new organisation was formed after members of the Voice of Mawlai People held a meeting with representatives of various groups across districts in the state.

"There is no difference between the Voice of Mawlai People and the Voice of Bri Hynniewtrep; we are one voice. Our objective is to strengthen the movement to demand justice for Cheristerfield," said Sylvester Kurbah, headman of Mawlai Phudmuri and the newly-appointed chairman of the new conglomeration.

Kurbah said that soon the Voice of Bri Hynniewtrep will handover a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on the demands initially made by the Voice of the Mawlai people.
