SHILLONG:

Meghalaya Health Minister Prestone Tynsong on Monday said that the government targets to achieve a 70 per cent vaccination rate in the state by the end of September this year.

Currently, the state has registered only 46 per cent, which is relatively low compared to other states in the country. The reason for this has been credited to the hesitancy on the part of the general public, owing to several reasons with religious resistance being one of them.

"Vaccine hesitancy is prevalent in both urban and rural areas. Teams of doctors are working at different capacities and in close coordination with local heads to spread awareness about vaccination and to contain the spread of COVID-19," Tynsong said, urging the people to support the health workers in their efforts to "bring the vaccine to your doorsteps".

"Don't demoralise our doctors, nurses, and our ASHAs and Anganwadi workers who are working very hard to contain the spread of the virus," he said, urging people “not to presume that the government has given up".

He also stated that the government is open to suggestions and ideas submitted by different stakeholders.

Meanwhile, the state government has decided to reopen places of worship and has also given the green signal for solemnization of marriages from August 16 but sans any reception. The Chief Secretary will soon be issuing the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in this regard.
