SHILLONG:

The Meghalaya Social Welfare Department has hit the spotlight once again and, this time for the alleged distribution of sub-standard rice to the beneficiaries under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) in Mawlai, Shillong.

Social Welfare Minister Kyrmen Shylla on Thursday said he has not received any official report but maintained that the department is on the job to validate the allegations.

The Dorbar shnong of Mawlai Mawroh had recently alleged that they found the rice distributed under the ICDS scheme for children aged between 3-6 years to be of sub-standard quality. The rice was marketed under the brand “Mahate rice”.

Speaking to reporters here in the city, Shylla said, “As of now, I don’t have any official report. So, from my side, we will look into it and take the matter accordingly. But, we will make sure that such things should not happen in our department and we will not allow anybody to practice anything which is against the department or the norms prescribed by the department.”

The department made headlines a few weeks ago following reports of an alleged ICDS fortified food scam that rocked the state.
