KHLIEHRIAT:

The Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills District in Meghalaya, on Thursday, informed that the rescue operation to retrieve the dead bodies trapped in Krem U-Le (mine shaft) at Umpleng in East Jaintia Hills district has been suspended until further notice.

The DC informed that due to incessant rains, the level of the water is on the rise which prevents and hamper the diving operations in the mine shaft for retrieval of other dead bodies.

A team from the Indian Navy, that was involved in the rescue operation for the past few weeks, has left the district on July 7 along with their diving equipment.

"Considering the onset of the monsoons, the diving teams are required for rescue operations elsewhere in the country," the statement read.

The services of the National Disaster Reserve Force and State DRF have also been de-requisitioned with effect from July 7.
