SHILLONG:

President of the People's Democratic Front (PDF) and cabinet minister Banteidor Lyngdoh on Wednesday asserted that the party would not be fielding any candidate for the Mawryngkneng by-poll.

"We are concentrating on the 2023 elections. That is the reason we are not fielding any candidate for the Mawryngkneng by-poll," Lyngdoh told TNT-The Northeast Today.

Like the PDF, the Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) is also not keen on contesting the by-poll.

Similarly, the United Democratic Party (UDP) is undecided on whether to field a candidate in the Mawryngkneng by-poll.

The ruling National People's Party (NPP) will be fielding party MDC and Chairman of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Pyniad Sing Syiem for the seat.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has declared Highlander Kharmalki as the party candidate for the by-poll.

Kharmalki had unsuccessfully contested the 2018 Assembly election on a PDF ticket.

The Mawryngkneng by-poll was announced following the demise of Mawryngkneng MLA (L) David Nongrum.
