SHILLONG:

National People's Party (NPP) MLA from Jowai, Wailadmiki Shylla has expressed confidence that the party will come back to power in the 2023 Assembly election.

“I'm quite confident that the NPP will win the next Assembly election,” said Shylla, adding that Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Vincent Pala, who is also from Jaintia Hills, won’t be able to put up a fight against the NPP in the elections.

“In the 2018 Meghalaya Assembly election, Congress managed to win only one seat in Jaintia Hills. And now, even with Pala as the chief, I don’t see Congress doing any better,” he said. On Saturday, Pala had said that he has no plans of contesting the 2023 elections and is “happy being in Delhi as an MP”.

Shylla also denied speculations that NPP members from Jaintia Hills are likely to shift to Congress, "We don't have such intentions, we are quite happy with the NPP," he added.

The people of Jaintia Hills however have been raising concerns over the developmental works undertaken by Shylla. Refuting all allegations that he has done nothing for the people of the region, Shylla argued, "I know what I've done on the developmental front and in the coming months, people will get to see that too. All the projects that we implemented will start to yield fruits.”

He also added that “people look at things differently on the eve of elections” and comparisons are bound to happen.
