Meghalaya: Nongtraw village gets a new ropeway

“Our goal is to create a cost-effective innovation and it only required a metallic cable wire and a few other things. This transportation system only depends on the laws of Physics and does not require electrical or fuel energy,” said Pius Ranee, NESFAS Executive director.

SHILLONG:

In a bid to create cost-effective transportation of local agricultural products, the North East Slow Food & Agrobiodiversity Society (NESFAS) on November 2 launched vertical transportation at Nongtraw village.

The launch of the ropeway project was attended by the NESFAS team, Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) chief Titosstarwell Chyne, village headman, and community members, among others.

Part of the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) Limited funded “No One Shall Be Left Behind Initiative”, the project will support farmers to transport agricultural produce, livestock and other materials through the steep hills of the village in the Khadar Shnong area, the NESFAS officials said.

“Our goal is to create a cost-effective innovation and it only required a metallic cable wire and a few other things. This transportation system only depends on the laws of Physics and does not require electrical or fuel energy,” said Pius Ranee, NESFAS Executive director.

"The only way in and out of Nongtraw is by trekking 3500 steps to and fro. But this innovation will take that out of question and help in easy transporting of local food products. Especially, from Jhum cultivation," added Ranee.

Speaking on behalf of the Nongtraw community, Pius informed that since proper road connectivity will still take time, the ropeway transportation will ease down the daily suffering of the people.

Chyne, who was the chief guest at the launch, highlighted that this unique and cost-effective mode of transportation will go a long way in serving the villagers, at least, till the village is properly connected via roadways.

“Unlike other programmes that are time-bound, this one is unique. We’re getting a chance to be one with nature without destroying the natural setting," Chyne said.

During the occasion, the village community were also handed the certificate of Best Sustainability Publication 2021 award by Hallbars and the Alfred Nobel Museum.
