SHILLONG:

Members of the Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) and Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) staged a protest demanding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) outside the Secretariat in Shillong on Friday.

Taking to the busy Shillong streets around 11:00 am, the protesters shouted their slogan - “We want ILP. No ILP, no rest”.

Meanwhile, the vice-chairman of the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organizations (CoMSO) and the president of HANM, Lam Kharbani, told TNT-The Northeast Today that the protest was a surprise agitation.

“It is only the beginning since we have seen that the government is indifferent to the demand for ILP,” Kharbani said.

Kharbani also stated that as some state leaders are leaving for Delhi, the agitation would serve as a reminder to the leaders to take up the ILP issue with the Centre.

Besides this, he stated that they would intensify agitations if the State Government fails to acknowledge their demands.
“We are gathered here in hundreds, next time it will be thousands,” he said.
