Meghalaya: Man lands in trouble for posting disrespectful comments against Niamtre believers

Meghalaya police on Monday apprehended one person, identified as Samuel Latam (19), a resident of Mynthlu village in East Jaintia Hills, for posting disrespectful comments on YouTube against believers of the indigenous faith – Niamtre and the Behdienkhlam festival. 

Members of the Seinraij, Jowai had filed an FIR against the social media user on June 19, a day after the distasteful comments were posted by him on YouTube. 

West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Bikram D Marak told The Northeast Today (TNT) that the person was asked to come to Jowai police station to provide an explanation, in the presence of elders and members of the Seinraij, an indigenous faith-based organisation. 

“A compromise was reached between the person concerned and elders of the Seinraij today (June 21) after the former promised to refrain from repeating the same mistake,” Marak said. 

Meanwhile, the president of the Seinraij, OR Challam said this would be the last time they compromise on such matters, adding that the same will not be tolerated in future. 

“We withdrew the FIR after the youth apologised and assured us to take down his post. But this should serve as a warning and lesson to others. Going forward, we will not compromise and will let the law take its own course. We will not just stand by and let people disrespect our faith and beliefs,” Challam said. 

Recently, a person, identified as Donlad Shylla, was arrested by Shillong Police from Nartiang in West Jaintia Hills for posting derogatory remarks against the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills, Isawanda Laloo.
