SHILLONG:

The president of the Mahila Pradesh Congress Committee, Joplyn Scott Shylla, has written to the Chairman of Meghalaya State Human Rights Commission concerning the death of Manisha Turnia who passed away due to COVID-19 recently.

Shylla in a letter addressed to the chairman has requested the commission to take action on the matter and bring justice to the deceased nurse.

“We would like to know the silence of the Commission on the matter, and why has the office not passed necessary instructions and called for an enquiry?” Shylla said.

She mentioned that the state health authorities went against the order of May 17, 2021, to disallow pregnant and ailing health workers across the rank from attending critical and emergency duties.

Shylla stated that the deceased nurse had applied for leave explaining her ill-health which was outrightly rejected by the matron in charge of the hospital and the establishment.

“Such callous attitude and inhuman mindset have affected the morale of our health professionals who have given and sacrificed themselves for the sake of society. Such behaviour is highly condemnable and shocking that the state government authorities have allowed the incident to happen,” she said.
