SHILLONG:

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to Health Minister James K Sangma, seeking his intervention for speedy completion of the Shillong Medical College.

“The union urges your swift intervention to expedite the work for completion of the Shillong Medical College, which would cater to the aspirations of the ever-increasing number of students in the medical field,” KSU Education Cell chairman, Raymond Kharjana said in a memorandum.

Stating that the delay in completion of the project shows the lack of commitment on the part of the government, Kharjana said that the previous government had laid the foundation of the hospital in 2017 at Reid Chest hospital in Shillong, construction of which was subsequently shifted to another site located at Umsawli, New Shillong, but to date, the same has not been completed.

Expressing dismay over the delay, Kharjana said the students' body had time and again taken up the matter with the government, but the work has been relatively slow and sluggish.

The KSU also expressed concern over awarding the construction contract to the Kolkata-based firm, Kali Pradip Choudhuri (KPC), stating that the firm has a tainted image owing to alleged involvement in cases of tax evasion.

According to Kharjana, KSU had also recently apprised the then health ministers on the need to revisit the agreement signed with the above-mentioned firm.
