SHILLONG:

The Jaintia Students' Union (JSU) has opposed the government move to hand over power generating stations to private entities, terming the proposal as a way towards privatisation of the MeECL.

In this regard, the union has written a letter to the Chairman-Cum-Managing Director of MeECL, opposing the tender for the operation and maintenance contract of two power stations of MePGCL to private bidders.

The Union have stated that despite MeECL having the technical and financial capability to undertake such operations on their own, but they have plans to outsource the same work to a third party.

Terming the move to be detrimental to the state as a whole, the Union have demanded the cancellation of the tender in the interest of the state.
