SHILLONG:

The Coordination Committee of Registered MeECL Employees Association and Unions (CCORMAU) on Wednesday urged the state government to scrap the proposed plan of handing over distribution and maintenance affairs of power stations to private companies.

The association also asked the government to address issues related to pensioners within June 15, 2021, and has threatened to take 'extreme measures' if the government fails to do so.

The union has stated that the decision to offer Broadcasting Engineering Consultants Corporation Limited (BECIL) the handling of the affairs of running the 56 Substations of MeECL is a step towards privatisation, and therefore, not desirable.

The association added that employees of MeECL run these substations with efficiency and that the maintenance cost would be much less if operated and run by the MeECL itself.

Pointing out pending pension payments, the body also urged the government to consider retirement benefits for the pensioners and not deny them their means of sustenance.
