Meghalaya Govt seeks help of Defence Ministry to rescue trapped miners

Sangma said that the state has sought the help of Navy divers to speed up the ongoing rescue operations, which has not yielded any results to date.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said that the state government has approached the Defence Ministry for naval support to rescue the miners trapped at a coal mine in East Jaintia Hills.

Sangma said that the state has sought the help of Navy divers to speed up the ongoing rescue operations, which has not yielded any results to date.

“We are going for all options. It is the responsibility of the government to ensure we take all steps and measures to save lives,” Sangma told media persons.

Five miners were trapped in a coal mine at Sutnga in East Jaintia Hills on the night of May 30, 2021, and the state government is still struggling with the rescue work to get them out from the mine.

Earlier, the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) had registered a case against the incident and sought a detailed report on it from the government

In this regard, the MHRC has also issued notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, to submit a detailed report to the Commission within 10 days.
