Meghalaya govt reviews COVID situation, gives go-ahead to Class 12 board exams

Amid the surge in COVID cases in Meghalaya, the state government has instructed the Health Department to intensify the vaccination drive across the state. 

The meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma was held on Wednesday to review the COVID situation. 

"Health Dept. has been instructed to intensify efforts to execute the vaccination drive & also increase the number of vaccination centres," Sangma tweeted.

Speaking to reporters, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed that the government would reactivate the community COVID centres given the surge of cases.

The government will continue its vaccination drive aggressively and, will increase the number of vaccination centres in the state, he added. 

"The state has 250 vaccination centres and, the vaccination drive will target the age group of 45 and above. The vaccination drive will be free of cost at government centres, whereas, private hospitals will charge Rs 250 for the same," Tynsong said.

As for the entry of returnees, he said returnees would have to mandatorily get themselves tested.

When asked about the possibility of lockdown, he said, "It's not a question of lockdown but, it is a question of restriction".

The state government also decided that the MBOSE examination for Class XII (Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate) will be held as scheduled. 

Meanwhile, the government is yet to take a call on the Class X (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) MBoSE exams. 

Speaking to reporters, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that health protocols would be strictly adhered to during the examination.

He added that students and parents should not worry as the "government has put in place all the precautionary measures."

The Deputy CM further informed that the government would reactivate the community COVID centres, given the surge in cases.
