NONGPOH:

Nongpoh Legislator Mayralborn Syiem has urged the Meghalaya government to meet its commitment to providing assistance to the COVID-19 Management Committees that are running the isolation centres.

These management committees provide accommodation to the COVID-19 patients in different villages of the state.

This statement came at the backdrop of the move taken by the Dorbar Shnong of Nongpoh Proper and the COVID-19 Crisis Management Centre (CCMC) to set up an isolation centre in Nongpoh which can accommodate around 40 beds for both males and females.

Ri Bhoi is one of the most affected districts in term of COVID-19 infection, with over 185 registered cases to date only within the district headquarter - Nongpoh itself.

The Nongpoh MLA Syiem said that it's a difficult time for all the residents of the state and the district in particular due to the crisis.

"With the virus spreading rapidly, it has become an utmost need for the villages to come up with their own isolation centres," he said.

The Dorbar Shnong(s) (traditional bodies) have been playing an active role in containing the spread of the virus and in providing assistance to the COVID infected individuals.

Syiem mentioned that the government must assure financial and resources assistance to the Dorbar Shnong(s). The state government had earlier decided to provide essential kits to each household that is under home quarantine.

Syiem also provided cash assistance of Rs 20,000 along with mattresses and pillows to the Dorbar Shnong of Nongpoh to ensure the smooth functioning of the Isolation Centre.
