SHILLONG:

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday informed that the government is examining the possibilities of relaxing the norms to enable limited tourism activities to kick start in the state.

“Tourism sector has suffered a lot and, now we are trying to see how we can start to relax but without increasing the risk and spread of Covid,” Sangma said.

He further informed that he had asked the deputy commissioners to have a consultation with stakeholders in the tourism sector to see if tourism can be re-started.

The CM said the government has decided to allow fully vaccinated people to enter the state, adding that the same yardstick can be applied for the re-opening of tourist spots across the state.

The government is also examining the option of allowing inter-district movement, which has been closed for several months, to ease the problem faced by the travellers.

“Many people (are facing) a lot of difficulties. We feel that we can slowly start allowing that; we have asked DC to discuss and look at that aspect. Commercial or private vehicle movement will lead to a lot of things happening, so it’s not very simple,” Sangma added.

He further informed that the government would be able to make more major decisions on relaxations by next week.

“There will be a slight increase of commercial vehicles movement in Shillong city and, the orders will come up soon,” he added.
