SHILLONG:

Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Thursday informed that police have picked up five people in regard to the coal mining mishap that happened at Sutnga in East Jaintia Hills (EJH) district recently, and an FIR has been filed against the people involved in the incident.

Speaking to media persons, Rymbui said that five people have been questioned so far, and their statements have been recorded for further course of action. Meanwhile, the owner of the coal mine surrendered on June 2.

The DC had ordered a magisterial enquiry and subsequently, after the incident, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) including SRT and Meghalaya Police rushed to the spot to carry out rescue operations, he informed.

Giving details about the recuse work, Rymbui said that he along with Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Kyrmen Shylla visited the site on Wednesday and found the mine filled with water.

"The SRDF team went inside the coal mine and assessed the water level to be about 152 feet. Three motors were taken to pump out the water from the site," he added.

“We are waiting to arrest the sordar/contractor of the labourer who is still absconding. A lookout notice has been issued,” he informed.

As for rescue operations, he said that the water pump and gen-set have reached the location, however, the inclement weather is still a deterrent factor.

Will not allow illegal activities: Conrad

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has stated that the government will not allow illegal coal mining and warn of strict action against it.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “The government is very firm and clear that none of the illegal activities will be allowed and anybody involved, strict action as per law will be taken against them.”

As for rescue operations, he said that the government is doing that, and hopes to bring them out safely although the inclement weather made the rescue operation difficult.

The CM maintained that appropriate action as per the law will be taken against the people involved in illegal mining and will ensure that illegal activities do not take place in the state.
