SHILLONG:

The Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Titos Chyne, on Tuesday, informed that Meghalaya's largest commercial hub - Iewduh will "partially" reopen on June 18, and has appealed to the shopkeepers and hawkers to get themselves vaccinated.

Speaking to media persons here in the city, Chyne said, “At the initial stage, we have suggested that shops will open on a rotational basis, and we will try to accommodate all the shops. Around 185 shops will be allowed to open per day."

He further informed that though vaccination is not mandatory, however, keeping the health and safety protocols in mind, the shopkeepers have been advised to get the vaccines.

However, fish stalls, wholesale vegetable stalls and meat stalls will not be allowed to open, he added.

Giving details about the reopening of the market, Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills Isawanda Laloo informed that only 10-15 per cent of the shops will be reopened and the Syiem (chieftain) of Hima Mylliem (Mylliem Kingdom) will work out the details.

"The Syiem will take the responsibility of working out the number of almost 4000 shops in the area. He has selected only 1222 shops that may be opened,” she said.

As for the hawkers, they will be regulated in such a manner that only 184 stalls will be allowed to open per day.

Laloo maintained that the shops selling items, including food commodities and perishable goods, will be allowed to open twice a week, whereas shops dealing in non-essential items such as utensils, garments, shoes will be permitted to open only once a week.

Meanwhile, the District administration has instructed the Syiem to be very strict with the COVID protocols, so that there is no unnecessary crowding in the area.

“If there is a single case detected in the area, we will be very strict and if the situation demands, we will order for necessary closure,” Laloo said.

EKH has the highest fatality rate in Meghalaya

The DC further said that the East Khasi Hills district has a fatality rate of 2.3 per cent which is the highest among all the districts in the state.

It may be mentioned that in terms of fatality, four out of the eight northeastern states showed better results than the national average percentage which is 1.27. Mizoram showed only 0.44 per cent fatality rate, Arunachal Pradesh 0.46 per cent, Assam 0.86 per cent, and Tripura 1.05 per cent.

However, the death rate in the other four states is worse. Sikkim showed 1.53 per cent fatality rate, Manipur 1.63 per cent, Meghalaya 1.75 per cent and Nagaland 1.92 per cent.

As for the vaccination drive in the district, she informed that from June 18 onwards, spot registration is permitted at designated COVID vaccination centres.
