SHILLONG:

Although a series of arrangements were made by the state government to enable farmers to sell their produce, business was not profitable as farmers and traders of Meghalaya are still trying to adjust to the new system in place.

The main wholesale market which is temporarily shut has kept a section of traders in a dire state as they continue to face difficulties on a regular basis.

The Anjalee parking lot, which has been turned into a temporary site for wholesale and retail purposes, was crowded on Monday, June 14, as new arrangements were made to accommodate more traders and customers to carry out their economic activities.

The goods here come from all around the state and are separated into two sections -- local products on one side and outstation produce on the other.

"Business is not doing well. We get fewer customers. We only managed to sell only a handful and the profit derived from that is gone on transportation fare, which is also on the rise," said an aggrieved farmer.

If this continues, we will die of hunger, he said, adding that the relaxations, though brought about in favour of the farmers, could not, however, provide the much-needed relief.

Meanwhile, others felt that the new arrangement was a breather as it allows more customers to purchase goods coupled with a change in the timings.

The government had earlier relaxed a few restrictions imposed on economic activities in the state with temporary sites being identified and set up for farmers and traders to sell their produce.
