SHILLONG:

Karo Sambhav, a social enterprise involved in e-waste management and recycling, will run a mobile e-waste collection drive in Shillong and seven other cities across India, including Kolkata, Vijayawada, Aizawl, Pune, Surat, Jalandhar and Hyderabad, on November 13.

The organisation in its endeavour to encourage e-waste recycling, will ply a van on city roads to collect used electronic materials that can be recycled across various industries.

In Shillong, the van will go around residential and commercial areas to make it convenient for people to give up their old electronics such as mobile phones, laptops, computers, printers, etc., for responsible recycling. Areas that will be covered in Shillong include Madanriting, Nongtymmai, Fire Brigade, Dhankheti, Don Bosco, Laitumkhrah, Nongrim Hills, Rynjah, Lapalang Lummarboh, Mawlai Nongpdeng, Iewrynghep, Motsyiar, Nonglum and Phudmuri.

The drive is aimed at creating awareness among consumers about the growing concerns over electronic waste of various forms and how to manage them without polluting the environment. The fact that a lot of electronic gadgets have parts made up of elements such as gold, titanium, silver, copper and other elements, they can be segregated and used for many other purposes by a diverse range of industries.

"While the government has put measures in place for e-waste management, every individual needs to contribute and recycle their e-waste responsibly for any measure to be effective," said Pranshu Singhal, founder of the organisation.

Interested people can also call the toll-free number 1800-2121-434 or leave a message on engage@karosambhav.com to have their e-waste collected. Incentives will also be provided to consumers to motivate them to dispose of their old electronic gadgets.
